I think if you are a library and don't have an ebook that should be illegal. when you open a library they should just give you infinity copies of every possible ebook for free.
#my diary#every day I'm tagging things 'notify me' on libby#I wish there was a way in the libby system that I could tell my library I want this ebook#but there is not#and I have yet to figure out how to request ebooks in my current library system#clevnet doesn't seem to have the functionality for that#they are allegedly updating to a new database (checks calendar) oh shit yesterday#so it'll be cool to see if that process becomes easier#anyway hi today is bad and I feel bad#but I have therapy in 3 minutes so maybe that'll make it less bad idk#I don't feel like I'm going to be particularly productive today

AS400 would never treat me like this
#this office is a prison#when your job tries to use a processing SaaS as a database things go SIDEWAYS with the worst timing#AS400 was reliable#it worked with no internet#it was simple#and had the instructions on the screen#ON THE SCREEN#SOB#AS400 you're the good boy lover that got away when the dumpsterfire of a character write in was shoved into the plot of my daily work orz#i have big feelings about the programs I'm made to use on a daily basis omo

"AI" this and "AI" that, NONE OF IT IS INTELLIGENT, WE HAVE NOT MADE INTELLIGENCE YET, WHY ARE WE LYING, DO WORDS MEAN NOTHING
#it's at best “machine learning” if it could even be considered learning#this is semantics but it's important semantics because words have meaning and we have to stop giving software more power than they deserve#I'm more on the side of “self-evolving programs” for what to call these things#like chat gpt is a self-evolving program which processes a database and simulates human speech based off that database#this is what being an english major has turned me into#artificial intelligence

about the error: the stackexchange people say don't touch it. my advisor says don't touch it. i don't want to touch it.
i think i have to touch it.
#i checked my code's documentation where it mentions the database that's throwing the error#and it doesn't show the thing i think i have to touch which is enabled by default#i know i had to do something to the database last time there was a power outage and the more i look at it#the more i think it was disabling this thing#this is the LAST step i need for processing and my advisor is away on family business#so this all really could not have happened at a better time#adventures in academia!

Folks. Buddies. Please. I understand you are all a bunch of middle-aged bibliophile ppl and are reluctant about the whole digitalisation thing.
But. Please. Please please accept that excel spreadsheets are not a database.
#listen all your processes are so inefficient and convoluted that everytime you explain a new one to me my eye starts twitching#i am aware that this is the results of years of depending on the random students you employ for a year or so before they move on#and that they were trying their best to create a system that you can easily use without understanding a thing about it#i know#i am aware#i understand.#but please#no matter how hard you try excel is never ever going to be a database#please accept that and move on#at this point this is not even about efficiency its about my sanity

i hate gen AI so much i wish crab raves upon it
#genuinely this shit is like downfall of humanity to me#what do you mean you have a compsci degree and are having chatgpt write basic code for you#what do you mean you are using it to come up with recipes#what do you mean you are talking to it 24/7 like it’s your friend#what do you mean you are RPing with it#what do you mean you use it instead of researching anything for yourself#what do you mean you’re using it to write your essays instead of just writing your essays#i feel crazy i feel insane on god on GOD#i would have gotten a different degree if i knew that half the jobs that exist now for my degree are all feeding into the fucking gen AI#slop machine#what’s worse is my work experience is very much ‘automation engineering’ which is NOT AI but#using coding/technology/databases to improve existing processes and make them easier and less tedious for people#to free them up to do things that involve more brainpower than tedious data entry/etc#SO ESPECIALLY so many of the jobs i would have been able to take with my work experience is now very gen AI shit and i just refuse to fuckin#do that shit?????

hey, thanks for the kind words. i'll admit that i kinda forgot for a while that daily demon spotlight was meant to be a blog for fun above all, and i got too obsessed with my perfectionism to where even the slightest criticism would make me panic and overcorrect everything
i really do appreciate what you said as it kinda just grounded me again and made me realize that i'm not some giant public figure, i'm just some teenage trans girl who likes to write, so thank you so much even if you didn't intend it to be that deep lmao 🙏
well im glad i could help 🥰 i've gotten the perfectionism bug with my own writing so i know how much it really sucks. i think it's also scary on the internet where people are increasingly becoming mean to people they don't know over even small things, so it prob feels like you're risking getting huge backlash over something that isn't all that difficult to fix. like, the demon spotlight is just a hobby blog covering figures that appear in a game series that in itself has questionable information and unclear sources, it's not an official compendium blog run by atlus yknow??? i get not wanting to spread misinformation or see it get spread ab mythological figures but for a hobby blog where it's not difficult to add to posts, i don't think it needs to be all that deep. don't be afraid to add an addendum to old posts if you ever come across new information or a correction, i think that kind of thing could be beneficial even if the original post had a lot of incorrect stuff in it
plus, with so many different retellings and translations of mythological stories i think people will consider different ones to be their "canon" to them. i mean like, i read ab two or three different takes just on ganesha's birth in a little section ab parvati in a book discussing a ton of different goddesses. and with language barriers and such, you're bound to run into inaccuracies tbh
i think it's a good preface for everyone involved to come into this understanding that it's easy to unknowingly run into wrong information ab figures, smt is full of inaccuracies in itself, the demon spotlight is just a hobby and isn't gonna get thesis-level work put into it, and the goal isn't to spread misinformation
as long as you keep doing your best in research and handling things as respectfully as you can, i don't think mistakes should be a huge deal. like, yea okay you fucked up a post cus you had bad sources, it's not the end of the world and i don't think you should feel like it's the end of the world or someone else should make you feel that way. just don't argue with people if they give you a correction. i mean, if someone's a total asshole about it that's not really something you can help, the best you can do is apologize and correct the original post. but there's no need to wallow in sorrow cus you got something wrong, it's really not the end of the world🥰👍
#the demon spotlight is a place to learn ab mythology in a fun way#and part of the learning process is correcting old info based on new info#its become a little easier to get over the perfectionism bug since i write about my own culture#so i can kinda do whatever the fuck i want (within reason) with our own mythology#but its still hard to deal with so i really do get it#i thought ab starting a blog like this myself but i didnt really have the time or energy for it#so seeing someone do this and start to waver#cus of mistakes that arent too difficult to fix is esp painful#so im glad i could help u feel better#also if youre not using it already i really encourage u to try finding sources thru ur school library's online database#they have access to things that r generally a little more reliable#i prob sound like an old person begging kids to use their libraries but you really can find some interesting things there#and online will have a lot more things than in person#a highschool might not have as much as a college would but its still worth trying out maybe???????#or dont............i wont tell you what to do lmao#oops im a certified yapper sorryyyy(lying)

Ugh, I really want to finish editing this chapter so I can keep my posting streak going (9 weeks straight!), but my head is so full of work-related information that I am literally buzzing; vibrating at high speed.
Here's hoping that going to bed will help the storage space in my brain and I can work on it tomorrow T_T
#love my new job so far#like. wayyyy more than i've liked any other job i've had.#seems like a great position and a good place to work#however. a coworker is leaving and her position is not one that can be left empty#so in the interim until we find someone to hire... i'll be filling in XD#not what anyone was expecting lmao least of all me#i don't mind especially since they were very clear that i'd be compensated for it#BUT it does mean learning at least two entirely new software programs and about a dozen databases and processes#and that's just the tip of the iceberg; not even mentioning the paperwork side of things#... in two weeks XDD#i have no background/experience in anything remotely related to this position. so it's all brand new info.#at the same time i'm also learning the ropes of my own position#which is far more familiar stuff but still. every workplace does things differently so i still need to figure out the specifics for here#brain is. ON FIRE.#withoutwords

#maybe im becoming a lil more petty asa person or something idk#but my manager will make some kinda snide comment about me not managing my team better#and im just sitting here thinking of all the ways i would be uniquely capable of making his work life hell#too many processes and too many features that im the only one who understands#our biggest marketing push rn is dependent on one of my projects i could torpedo this shit rn#it would not be difficult to work around a test case to introduce a bug i know wont be caught until it hits production#if i just bounced no one else understands our regulatory reporting shit#if i was really in a ‘burn it all down fuck consequences’ state of mind i could do a lot more#lemme just start deleting customer database. dropping tables. whoops everyones account balance got reset to $0 howd that happen#woah this place lost all its data the day they’re scheduled to be audited! what are the odds!!!

Cracking the Code: Understanding the Essentials of Database Forensics
Unlike preferred digital forensic areas such as video, audio, or mobile forensics, database forensics is not frequently taken on. Performing database forensics calls for knowledge of database-related innovation; without this expertise, it .... #forensics

lmfao someone who commissioned AI generated images from Bing and tagged them as “fanart” tried to follow me, an actual digital artist. Blocked.
#Newsflash: pressing buttons on Bing to make it chop up and mash together images from the internet does not make you an artist#I wouldn’t have a problem with it if the process were ethical#and it picked from a specific database of work the artists consented to be uploaded to the mainframe#That would be fine; I’d participate in that and give it art to see what it cranks out#But I still wouldn’t call the end result art#I’d call it… computer fever dream#Only after AI gains sentience can you call its work art#AI right now is awful#same with filters and all convenience-centric low-effort means of so-called “creation”#It’s just a vehicle to let lazy anti-intellectuals with egos too large for their skill sets boast about how creative they are#at the expense of the people who actually put in the blood sweat and tears to create things#It reminds me of those kids in school who called themselves nerds when they weren’t interested in learning at all#and actively picked on the real nerds with unconventional interests#Sorry but no. You’re not smarter than everyone else and you’re not fooling anyone; if you want skills you have to work for it#Don’t say you’re skilled when you’re not even trying to be; it’s genuinely offensive to those who do try at any skill level#Full offense#I don’t have a problem with people who use certain types of AI for humor or describing what something they saw looks like#but I do have a problem with people taking credit they don’t deserve#No you’re not an artist if you only use AI#pick up a pencil and put it to paper

OMG yes
It's not that I think that it's a-ok for AI to steal everything around it willy-nilly, but I really think that the current AI problem is about AI's practical aspects than a moral issue. I mean, tools and techniques are (most of the time, exceptions apply!!) relatively neutral in their existence, we are the ones giving it meaning and value. We are the ones that decide the good (cooking) and the bad (killing) use of a knife. And we are the ones who decide when the bad use might not be that bad ('citizen killing another citizen in a street' vs 'soldier killing another soldier in a war').
To me, the AI issue is a "it's not 'we' who are giving it meaning and purpose, it's a small group of people who barely even know how it works and are only interested in the profits it may or may not bring".
In a way, since AI is an intelligence that adapts with time, training it is a bit like raising a pet, isn't it? I would prefer that my pet is raised by me and people I trust, not handed to me pre-trained by a guy who has a record of using pets to steal wallets, and being required to hand it over to that guy's pet daycare every day for 'updates in the training'. Hm-hm, wallet-stealing guy, it's not suspicious at all.
ed zitron, a tech beat reporter, wrote an article about a recent paper that came out from goldman-sachs calling AI, in nicer terms, a grift. it is a really interesting article; hearing criticism from people who are not ignorant of the tech and have no reason to mince words is refreshing. it also brings up points and asks the right questions:
if AI is going to be a trillion dollar investment, what trillion dollar problem is it solving?
what does it mean when people say that AI will "get better"? what does that look like and how would it even be achieved? the article makes a point to debunk talking points about how all tech is misunderstood at first by pointing out that the tech it gets compared to the most, the internet and smartphones, were both created over the course of decades with roadmaps and clear goals. AI does not have this.
the american power grid straight up cannot handle the load required to run AI because it has not been meaningfully developed in decades. how are they going to overcome this hurdle (they aren't)?
people who are losing their jobs to this tech aren't being "replaced". they're just getting a taste of how little their managers care about their craft and how little they think of their consumer base. ai is not capable of replacing humans and there's no indication they ever will because...
all of these models use the same training data so now they're all giving the same wrong answers in the same voice. without massive and i mean EXPONENTIALLY MASSIVE troves of data to work with, they are pretty much as a standstill for any innovation they're imagining in their heads
#ai#ai critique#capitalism#I'll forever claim that if I had my own piece of AI that I could train just with open data and my own data I'd get it#because *I* get to determine which parts of my creative process I want to engage with and which ones are chores#if you think I wouldn't get it to help me draw the same character and backgrounds 100 time in a comic you are mistaken#but I would still do or redo whatever I don't think is working up to erasing everything and redoing by hand#you know - how we already use graphic software#it's important I'd train it with my own data and transparency with its training database would be important of course#I'd even buy training data if I thought it would improve what I want and the person is willing to sell#but all of this pipe dream is conditioned to “is it possible? and feasible? in this year of our lord 2025?”#and sadly I think it's not yet - we still have a lot to do and dismantling capitalism is one of them
